K&N is not a common name among everyday Americans like FRAM or NAPA. So what is it about their oil filters that have gained a large and trusted following?  

In our K&N oil filter review, we looked specifically at the K&N HP-1010 filter by investigating its price and availability as well as many of its noteworthy features.

We concluded our review by comparing it with three other competitors.

What Is a K&N Oil Filter?

The K&N HP-1002 was originally created to fulfill auto racing needs, but it became a popular premium filter among many armchair racers and day-to-day drivers.

It features K&N’s Wrench-Off assembly, heavy-duty construction, and efficient filtering.

The K&N team featured some experienced racers who wanted a new approach to changing filters with the release of the HP-1010.

The welded head can be easily removed with a standard hex wrench.

An anti-drain back valve keeps the oil in the engine to prevent dry starts after changing filters or on cold mornings, and durable threading is resistant to stripping during installation.

The high performance filter uses a thicker canister wall for added durability against being dropped or being pelted with rocks.

The durable construction also allows for high oil pressure that would be common in the racing world with no fear of bursts.

The oil filter nut has a hole where a safety wire can be attached. This prevents a blown filter from leaving the car and becoming a hazard to other drivers. These holes are required in many racing associations.

Product Specs

The N&K HP-1002 is built with an anti-drain back valve and a bypass valve. The gasket is composed of Viton rubber.

Viton rubber is a synthetic rubber with fluoropolymer elastomers. It is commonly found in O-rings, specialty gloves, and other products.

The HP-1002 uses a high-flow premium media for filtering. A removal nut with a one-inch width is welded in place, and the product comes with a limited one-year warranty.

Pricing

During our K&N oil filter review, we found the HP-1002 oil filter priced at just over $9. This was very similar to the price of several other filters we looked at alongside the K&N filter.

These filters were all within about a dollar-and-a-half of each other. with the Mobil 1 M1-110 coming in as the outlier with a price around $15.

The M1-110 offered extended filtering efficiency and longevity beyond the other competitors in our K&N oil filter review, so the slightly higher price was to be expected. The similarity of the remaining filters made us feel they were all fairly priced.

1. K&N Oil Filter

Ease of use

Installation and removal are made easy using the Wrench-Off removal with a standard hex wrench and the provided one-inch hex nut.

Many filters now use spin-on designs that require no tools at all, but some drivers feel better with a physical nut in place. It is really a subjective choice for each driver.

Effectiveness

The HP-1002’s strong walls and overall durability are great for high oil flow rates. The anti-drain back valve is efficient at ensuring oil is available every time you start your car.

However our K&N oil filter review found other brands offered more longevity with a silicon valve instead of synthetic rubber.

Some drivers and mechanics do not like the non-traditional media that is resin-impregnated with a cotton-like consistency and features no wiring.

However, the filter is guaranteed to meet each car’s suggested oil change intervals, and it is compatible with all synthetic, conventional, and blended motor oils.

Durability

High oil flow rates are attainable because of the HP’s heavy-duty canister walls. These provide durability against bursting as well as being dropped or struck by debris on the road. K&N’s one-year warranty on a $9 part is an indicator of its durability.

K&N Oil Filter Review: Conclusion

At the conclusion of our K&N oil filter review, we gave the HP-1010 four stars. We really liked the filter’s unique hex nut design for fast installation and removal. It is about as fast as spin-on models, but the nut gave us a feeling of extra security.
